Climate Change Strategy

 

Main strategic principles to minimize the environmental impact of its operations & to mitigate climate change:

 

  • Swipes Inc. also uses key performance indicators to minimize our environmental impact to air, water and soil
  • Use Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methods to measure the carbon footprint of our products & processes
  • Support Sustainable Forestry Management (SFM)
  • Manage supply chain to optimize transportatio
  • Lower our CO2 emissions
  • Use energy efficiently


Sustainable Forestry Management

 

  • Swipes Inc. prefers use of certified wood
  • By policy, we do not buy anything from controversial sources
  • Over 90% of the pulp purchased is produced under chain of custody (COC)
  • 10 of our global developer and manufacturer’s plants have chain of custody certificates
  • In 2008, 7 of our global developer and manufacturer’s plants received COC certificates; more are in the process of getting certified

 

Manufacturing Process

ISO 14001 is an international standard on environmental management which helps companies to:
  • Minimize how their operations negatively affect the environment (i.e.: adverse changes to the air, water, or land)
  • Comply with applicable laws, regulations, and other environmentally oriented and other environmentally oriented requirements
  • Continually improve on the above

 

Currently 91% of our global developer and manufacturer’s production capacity is ISO 14001 certified with a target for all sites to be ISO 14001 certified.

Swipes Lovin Wipes ® does not use any materials that have been chlorine bleached
  • Swipes Inc. purchases and uses only elemental chlorine free (ECF) pulps in their wiping products
  • The viscose and lyocell fibers purchased by Swipes Inc. are made from ECF or TCF pulps

 

Bio-toxicity & Health and Safety
  • Swipes Inc. works with a global developer and manufacturer who subjects all raw materials to bio-toxicity testing to assure that they are non-toxic and safe for our water and land environments
  • Stringent health and safety testing of each raw material protects the safety of workers, and consumers and assures safe air emissions

 

Through continuous improvement system, Swipes Inc. strives to annually reduce:

Biodegradable/Compostable

How do we define biodegradability?

  • In general, we consider a material that can be decomposed by microorganisms into compounds like CO2, H20, and other simple non harmful compounds as biodegradable
  • Swipes Inc. uses EN 13432/ ASTM 6400/ ISO 17088 as the standards to define biodegradability and compostability
  • For our dispersible products that interact with an aqueous environment, we adhere to the biodegradable criteria and tests defined in the INDA/EDANA flushable guidance document

Dispersible

  • Our global developer and manufacturer commercialized the 1st dispersible wipe (which also degrades in a sewage environment)
  • Swipes Lovin Wipes ® utilizes their manufacturers Patented technology

Tube Test for Dispersibility

  • 360°Rotational Test
  • First break: Break up into two or more pieces
  • Many pieces: Break up into four or five ~20mm pieces
  • Reach a state of individual fibers

Our dispersible products are also biodegradable

  • High cellulosic content of these products means that they are highly biodegradable in a sewage/aquatic environment
  • They pass the tests and criteria defined in the INDA/EDANA Flushable Guidance Document

 

Recycled

We are developing wipes which contain recycled natural and post-consumer fibers

  • Reduce CO2 emissions
  • Save energy
  • Reduce waste to landfills

 

 

Wetlaid

Wetlaid materials

• Provide controlled porosity, high wet strength and dimensional stability

• Use of a wide variety of natural fibers to form highly uniform materials

• Natural fibers: wood pulp, abaca, kenaf, sisal, etc

 

Applications include:

  • personal care wipes
  • baby and toddler wipes
  • flushable moist toilet wipes
  • anti-microbial wipes
  • glass and window wipes
  • hand sanitizer wipes
  • household disinfecting wipes
  • other surface cleaning wipes

 

Water usage in production

• River stream purified before use

• Recycled many times in our manufacturers process

• Purified again before being added back to river
